 How To Cook Calamares Recipe

Calamares is a Filipino food version of the breaded fried squid dish that comes from the Mediterranean recipe. Calamares is a common dish when you have occasion, especially when you’re celebrating in a restaurant. Some restaurants here in the Philippines also offer on their menu if you crave and want to eat Calamares. This dish has two different methods on how to cook, the common one does not have breadcrumbs. But if you want to make it more visually appealing and want some crunchier texture you can add breadcrumbs to it.


Calamares comes with different sauces when served. A dipping sauce can add more flavor to the squid when you eat it. Some sauces are: tomato only, mayonnaise only or the combination of the tomato and mayonnaise. It also comes with spiced vinegar or toyomansi (toyo with calamansi).

Here are the Ingredients you need in cooking Calamares

  • 1/2 lb medium to large sized squid cleaned and sliced into rings (or you can purchase packaged squid rings found in the supermarket)
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 piece raw egg beaten
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 cups cooking oil

  1. Combine squid, salt, and ground black pepper in a bowl then mix well. Let stand for 10 minutes. While preparing the bater and cooking pan.
  2. Heat a cooking pot the pour-in cooking oil.
  3. Dredge the squid in flour then dip in beaten egg and roll over in the flour and then dip again to the beaten eggs then breadcrumbs.
  4. When the oil is hot enough, deep-fry the squid until the color of the coating turns brown. 
  5. Remove the fried squid from the cooking pot then transfer in a plate lined with paper towels or kitchen drainer tool.
  6. Serve with dipping sauce.

Note: This should only take about 2 to 3 minutes in medium heat. Do not overcook the squid. Another tip is you can check the cooking oil if it is ready to fry or not by using a skewer wooden stick. When you dip the wooden stick and see some bubbles your oil Is ready for frying.
